The exile for Rama was badly received all across Ayodha. The citizens of Ayodha were very angry with the king and queen Kaikeyi. There was a wave of anger, resentment and rumours across the kingdom.
Inside the kingdom also, every thing was uneasy. Apart from Kaikeyi and Manthara not a single being was happy. The king's condition turned all the more pathetic. He couldn't tolerate the departure of his beloved son. He waited eagerly for the royal minister to return with his son, but when minister Sumant returned alone, the king fainted once again. He eventually left eating and drinking and finally on the 6th day after Rama's departure the King left the world forever.
It is important to note here that while this whole incident took place, unfortunately Bharat was not present in Ayodha. He had been to his mother's home to visit his maternal grandparents. Only after the demise of the king, Bharat was informed and was asked to return back to Ayodha.
When Bharat came to know of the entire incident, he couldn't believe his ears. He was completely taken aback by the deeds of his mother. He was so furious that he said many unpleasing words to his mother. On seeing the reaction of his son, Kaikeyi finally realised the consequences of her action and felt guilty of herself.
After performing the cremation of his father, Bharat decided not to take over the kingdom. He claimed that the kingdom belonged to his elder brother Rama and only he deserved to be the king of Ayodha. Having decided that, he announced that he would go to forests in search of his brother and shall respectfully bring them back to the kingdom. These words spread fast across the kingdom and soon many people from kingdom decided to accompany Bharat in this task.
Finally Bharat, along with his three mothers, royal minister Sumant, royal Guru Vashistha, King Janak (father of Devi Sita) and many citizens from the kingdom marched towards the forest in search of Lord Rama.
