Ramayana perhaps is the most knowledgeable holy books of all time. Written by the great Sage Valmiki, it consists of around 24000 verses and dates back to 4^th century BC. Portraying the life story of Maryada purushottam (literally meaning the best purush or male in following Religion) Lord Rama, this epic has been a source of inspiration since time immemorial. The original epic was written in Sanskrit which however was translated in Awadhi language by Goswami Tulsidas in around 16^th century. The translated epic named Ramacharithamanas (literally meaning the lake of the deeds and character of Lord Rama) is however more popular in modern Indian society. The book has been of great importance in Hinduism and is being worshipped at many occasions. The book has been the source of many films, serials and dramas world-wide. The book also has been translated in almost all the Indian languages and many foreign languages too.

Significance of Ramayana

There are many Hindu holy books but the Ramayana has a place of its own. The reason perhaps is its being more close to practical human life than any other epic. In spite of dealing with many supernatural activities and characters, it mainly remains close to the way of human life. While all the other holy books deal mainly with the extreme power of Gods and their stories, Ramayana teaches us the way to lead our life.

Ramayana is a brilliant depiction of Lord Rama and his life style which carries us through all the stages of a human life, right from his birth to his death, and shows us what is desired out of us at every stage. The playfulness  of a child, the manners and objectives of a student, the role of a husband, the duties of a father, the care of a wife and a mother, the service of a brother, the loyalty of a servant, the rule of a king and whatever else it may be, Ramayana deals with each and every aspect of life.

Along with the lessons of life, the biggest teaching of Ramayana is the victory of good over evil. It teaches us that the path of goodness might seem difficult but at the other end of it there lies vast amount of joy, respect, grace and contentment. While the path of evil might look easy to follow and more powerful but it always results in the downfall of the one who follows it.
