Gita, more
accurately ShrimadBhagavad Gita is considered to be the most purest
and holiest among all the Hindu mythological books. It is considered to be the
exceedingly pure because unlike other books or epic this was not written by any
saint but was dictated by Lord Krishna himself to Arjun during the battle of
Kurukshetra. Hence each word of this holy book is the word of God (Vishnu) imparting
the knowledge about this world which is created, continued and destroyed by God
himself.
Well, there
always has been confusion regarding what actually is Gita, or which book is
truly considered Gita. Many of us mistakenly consider the Gita and Mahabharata
to be same. While Mahabharata is a whole epic describing by whole the
happenings of Threta Yuga and mainly the war between the Pandavas and
Kauravas, Gita refers only to the
sayings of Lord Krishna during the war.
While the
war of Mahabharata was about to begin, Arjun asked his chariot-rider Lord
Krishna to take his chariot in the middle of two armies so that he could see
clearly whom he was to fight. On reaching the middle of battlefield Arjun
frightened to see the members of his clans on both side of the armies. Worryingly
he told Krishna that he couldn’t fight this battle only to kill the great
people who were his elders in family, to whom he had always looked up to, whose
blessings helped him to rise and become such a great warrior. Having said this,
he dropped his bow and arrows and sat disappointedly.
At this
point of time, Krishna stopped the time span. Everything on the earth stood
still and there was a long conversation between Krishna and Arjun. The conversation
that took place then is only what is considered to be Gita. Krishna told Arjun
that being a warrior, it was his duty to fight the battle and win regardless of
who was on the other side of army. Krishna told him that the whole world rather
whole Universe started with him (Krishna) and will finish with him. He
(Krishna) was responsible for every killing on this Earth. No one can kill
anyone against his wants. Lord Krishna also showed him his humongous body
structure where he was controlling all the planets and other heavenly bodies on
earth. Krishna gracefully replied to all
the Arjun’s queries and only when Arjun was fully convinced did he return to
the battle and fought to register Pandava’s victory in the greatest battle ever
fought.
Whatever
Krishna told Arjun during that conversation is compiled in Gita. In a nutshell
below is what Gita says:
- The world is in all of its form is controlled by Lord Krishna. Everything starts from him and eventually finishes to him.
- He (Lord Krishna) in various forms comes to earth to restore peace whenever required. Whenever the evil powers have raised there affect on Earth he had taken Avatars (incarnations) and shall continue to do so in future because the protection of religion/truth and destruction of evil is his prime motive.
- All the creatures in world are to complete their life-cycle and at the time of their death, they leave one form of body only to enter the other form. In this way no one kills anyone as the soul is immortal which neither can be created nor can be destroyed. Like you put off one pair of clothes and put on the other, similarly your soul leaves one body and marches for other.
- No one belongs to you and you belong to no one, for everyone in your life is to play his/her role and shall definitely go one day.
- Everything that is born has to die one day. In this way it is totally useless to attach yourself to someone and then moan for its loss.
- All of us come to this Earth bare-handed and shall leave it the same way. There is no point in collecting wealth and great earthly pleasures. You should not repent for any loss and equally should not rejoice in any achievements. Only a person who is above all these earthly pleasures can claim to have lived the way, I (Lord Krishna) desire you to live.
- There is no other great deed than to live on the earth and play your role in accordance with the religion teaches. Those who live their lives in such a way shall at the end of their life get Moksha and shall be free from this cycle of birth and death which otherwise continues forever.
- All the pains and joys of the human life is the result of their deeds itself and they will have to face all the good and bad done by them in their life itself.
All these
teachings have been further demonstrated through the means of several stories
which essentially gives us an insight into the way of life and paves the path
for ultimate Moksha.
